FR Lions Club Peace Poster Winners Announced
The annual Lions Club Peace Poster Contest has been completed and Morghan Taylor, a sixthgrade student at Forbes Road Elementary, is this year's winner. Morghan's poster is among more than 350,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 21st annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest and will advance to round two district competition. Ultimately, one grand-prize winner will receive a cash award of $2,500 and 23 semifinalists will receive cash prizes of $500 each.
Locally, Morghan was warded $75 for first place. Second-place winner Cali Mitchell received $50 and Rachel Miller received $25 for third place. Each of the other 32 Forbes Elementary sixthgrade students received a $5 bill for participating.
Forbes Road Lions Club President Tim Grissinger said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at the elementary. "It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means ot them. I'm so proud that we are able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions."
Thanks to all students who participated; to Mrs. Black, Forbes art teacher, Mr. Helse, Forbes Elementary principal; the sixth-grade teachers and other staff members for their cooperation in this project.
In other Lions Club news, Lion Franklin "Huck" Smith was recognized as the 2007- 2008 Lion of the Year and Lion Donald Eisaman was installed as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor bestowed on a Lions Club member.
The Forbes Road Lions will be distributing fruit baskets on Tuesday, December 9. Anyone knowing of someone who should receive a basket or is new to the Forbes Road area should contact any Forbes Road Lions member or call 987-3296 or 987-3395 to have them added to the list.
The "Teddy Thanos" Memorial basketball tournament, sponsored by the Forbes Road Lions, will be December 20 and 30. All are invited to attend.
