Dorothy "Dollie" L. Mellott, 87, Mercersburg, died at home after an extended illness Saturday, November 15, 2008, at 8:00 p.m.

Born in Neelytown, Pa., May 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Beulah Nead Locke and the wife of the late Paul Dayton Mellott.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Whitney; four brothers: Robert "Joe" Wallace, Richard and Stanley Locke and five sisters: Hazel Brown, Mary Brown, Janet Locke, Mildred Linn and Bernice Kling.

Surviving are four children: Gerald "Jerry" Mellott, Chambersburg; Janice Gray, York; Julie Neil, Englewood, Fla.; and Tamara Cupie, New York City; eight grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; eight greatgrandchildren and two step-greatgrandchildren.

In her earlier adult years, she operated a forklift at Letterkenny Army Depot, drove a school bus and was a caregiver and foster parent to many people. She felt her greatest roles in life were that of wife and mother.

She was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 517 of Mercersburg, where she served as sergeant of arms for many years, the Mercersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Farm Women of Huntingdon County, Golden Agers of Shade Gap and as the oldest member was dubbed "Queen Mother" of the "Red Lockes" Red Hat Society.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 20, at Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap. Rev. Donald Bender and Pastor David Hamilton will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held afterwards with refreshments at the church ministries building.

A viewing will be held at Lininger- Fries Funeral Home in Mercersburg, Wednesday evening, November 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and prior to the services on Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Hospice of the Good Shepherd or to Mercersburg American Legion Auxiliary.
