MMS Announces Students of the Month for October

Michaela Harrison, Nick Leturgey, and Sydney Kerlin have been selected as the students of the month for the month of October.

Sydney Kerlin is an eighth grader at McConnellsburg Middle School. She is the daughter of Donnie and Michelle Kerlin. She has one sister, Savannah, and one brother, Jesse. She is involved in SADD and plays soccer and basketball. Outside of school, she plays AYSO soccer and Bi-Valley softball.

Sydney's hobbies include hanging out with friends, music and movies. Sydney's favorite subject is history. She was nominated for this honor by her history teacher, Joshua Strait. He nominated Sydney for her excellent behavior, her great attitude, citizenship, volunteerism and participation in class. Strait wrote, "Sydney demonstrates great classroom awareness in history. Her work is always completed above classroom expectations and she is respectful to her peers and teachers. Sydney's attitude makes her a joy to have in class." After high school, Sydney would like to attend college in New York City and pursue a degree in law.

The seventh-grade winner is Nick Leturgey. He is the son of Angela DiCosimo and Brian Leturgey. His stepmother is Nicole Leturgey. Nick has two brothers, Steven and Christopher Leturgey, and one sister, Sarah Leturgey. Nick's favorite subject is government/civics. He was nominated by his family and consumer science teacher, Barb Sowers. She recommended Nick for many reasons which include good behavior, attitude, homework completion and all his hard work in class. Sowers wrote that, "Nick is a very polite young man who enters the classroom quietly and ready for class. He readily attacks assignments and sticks with them until completed. Nick is a real joy to have in class." Outside of school, Nick plays for the Rockets in the Mercersburg Football League. His hobbies include playing PlayStation II, eating hot wings and playing and watching the Dallas Cowboys. In the future, Nick would like to attend college.

The sixth-grade winner for October is Michaela Harrison. She is the daughter of Odette Sheffield and Michael Harrison. Michaela has three sisters: Olivia and Trinity Harrison and Alexis Rodriguez. Her favorite subjects include English and social studies and she has been involved in the elementary school musicals, including this year's Robin Hood. Other school activities include SADD and volleyball. In her free time, Michaela likes to read, sing and hang out with friends. Michaela was nominated for student of the month by her English teacher, Denise Mellott. She was nominated for her good behavior, attitude, citizenship, participation, volunteerism and homework completion. Mellott said that "Michaela is a terrific student. She is a hard worker and she is very helpful in the classroom. Michaela is a true joy." This past marking period Michaela made the all "A" honor roll and has been on the "A/B" other years. One day, Michaela would like to go to college and study to become a teacher or a veterinarian.
