Named President Of National Transportation Organization
PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E., has been elected as president of a national organization that represents each state's highway and transportation departments. He served as vice president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials this year.
Biehler has identified three emphasis areas that will guide the organization in 2009. At the forefront is the authorization of a new federal surface transportation program. AASHTO will work with Congress to create a program that is multimodal and identifies options to fund the needed investments to our nation's transportation system.
A second emphasis area focuses on progressing to sustainability where transportation investments benefit the economy and the environment, as well as improve the quality of life for citizens. The third emphasis area involves developing strategic business plan for multimodal freight since the efficient movement of goods is vital to a healthy economy.

AASHTO also represents the highway and transportation departments of the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The organization's primary goal is to foster the development, operation and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system.
