Burgoyne Wins Delaware And Maryland State Championships
Local motocross racer Cody Burgoyne age 14 recently competed in the Delaware State Championship. The race was held the weekend of September 27 and 28 at Blue Diamond Motocross Park in New Castle, Del.
Burgoyne raced in three classes. In the Schoolboy 12-16-year-old, he chose to race his KTM 105cc bike. Racing against other 125cc bikes was tough but he managed to ride hard and would come home with third place.
In the 85cc 12-15-year-old class, Burgoyne struggled with the start in the first moto. He worked hard and would end up finishing fourth in the first moto. The second round of moto's gate picks are based on finishes from the first moto so Burgoyne would get a better gate pick for the second moto. He and another racer took an early lead and would run side by side for several laps. Burgoyne rode smooth and would finish on top, taking the checkered flag for a second overall.
Racing in the Super Mini 12-15- year-old class, Burgoyne grabbed the holeshot in the second moto but would have some tough competition from two other racers. For three laps they were running fairly close. Rounding the corner of the third lap, one of the racers would make a desperate attempt to pass and would end up going down right in front of Burgoyne. He lost several important seconds and would have only one lap to regain the lead.
At each section of the track, Burgoyne's gap would shorten but it was the "whoop" section that would help him the most - he shot across that section to take back the lead and would gap second place to take the overall win of the day.
This past weekend Burgoyne competed in the Maryland State Championship at Budds Creek in LaPlata, Md. Two motos were held on Saturday and one was held on Sunday. Instead of the usual four-lap motos all races were five laps.
Burgoyne got the holeshot in five out of six motos in the 85cc 12- 15/Super Mini 12-15 classes. In one of the motos his gate stuck at the start, and he would end up last around the first corner. By the end of the first lap, he was in second place and would make the pass for the lead during the second lap. He won all six motos and took home two first-place state championships.
In addition to the 85cc classes, Burgoyne also raced in the Schoolboy 12-16 two-stroke class and placed second in all three moto's.
Burgoyne is sponsored by SCOTT USA, Motul Inc., Championship Powersports, Ridersville Cycle and Pey-Bry Distributors. He is currently in ninth grade and attends Southern Fulton High School where he is a member of the junior high soccer team, senior high chorus and the Environmental Science Club.
