MHS & MMS Recognized For Committing To Improve The Health, Wellness Of Its Students

Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition & Activity (PANA) is proud to recognize McConnellsburg High School and McConnellsburg Middle School as a Keystone Healthy Zone School for the 2008- 2009 school year. PANA's fifth annual Keystone Healthy Zone (KHZ) campaign publicly recognizes Pennsylvania schools for their commitment to creating and maintaining healthy school environments by providing students with options to eat healthy and be active.

By enrolling as a KHZ school, Mc- Connellsburg High School joins a statewide network of school and community partners uniting to improve the health and wellness of today's youths and families.

Membership in this campaign provides schools with up-to-date information and materials, professional development opportunities, free and discounted education programs, and equipment. It also provides fun events to generate support among students, families, staff and the community.

"This is our third year participating in the Keystone Healthy Zone campaign," remarked Jessica Fish, SADD advisor. "This campaign provides us with yet another way to present a well-rounded educational experience to our students."

According to PANA executive director Allison Topper, "schools who have regularly engaged with our Keystone Healthy Zone campaign shower a lower incidence of overweight and obesity in annual BMI screenings when compared against the national average."

Over the past four years, the campaign's training materials, technical assistance and other resources have helped schools increase physical activity before and after school; enhance the time or quality of their physical education curriculum; change vending or a la carte food options; better integrate nutrition education; and upgrade their physical education equipment.
