Pa. Legislature OKs Electricity Conservation Bill
      HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A heavily lobbied bill to cut electricity prices and encourage energy conservation easily passed the state Legislature last Wednesday as lawmakers rushed to ease the pain of disappearing rate caps for a growing number of Pennsylvanians.

John Deere Tractor Collection On Display During Fall Folk Festival
      The third annual "Can't Help It - I Love that Green" John Deere tractor collection belonging to Fulton County residents Gary H. and Nancy L. Peck will be displayed on the hill in front of their home at 4117 Breezy Point Road, McConnellsburg, this weekend during the biggest county celebration of the year - the Fulton County Fall Folk Festival.

     Needmore Volunteer Fire Co. invited the southern Fulton County commumity to take a look at its new equipment building (seen here at left) at an open house Saturday afternoon that followed the company's annual parade of fire equipment, majorette units, floats and the Southern Fulton High School band. Also on tap for the big celebration were games and the fire company's famously good festival food.

Man Faces Fine After Aiding Trapped Skunk
      SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) - A man who says he tried to give a trapped skunk a respite from the hot sun is now in a bit of a stink with the city. Ryan Turner, 30, says that in July a skunk was caught in a trap on city property near his house. After it spent a weekend in the trap, Turner says he moved it into his yard and gave it some shade.

Pa. River Re-searched For Remnants Of Lost Bomber
      PITTSBURGH (AP) - Divers and scientists plan to spend the weekend in Pittsburgh's Monongahela River, using new technology to search the murky waters for a mystery a half-century old: the remnants of a World War II-era bomber that crashed into the river during the Cold War.

Pa. Governor To Sign Dog Law Overhaul
      HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gov. Ed Rendell said Wednesday he will sign a bill intended to dramatically improve the care and treatment of dogs kept in Pennsylvania's larger commercial kennels. The measure would impose new regulations to increase the size of cages, require annual veterinary checkups and crack down on what critics describe as inhumane puppy mills.

Bridge Under Construction
      The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Cowans Gap State Park, announces that the highway bridge at the upper end of the lake is being replaced. Hikers and hunters should be aware that the lakeside trail will be open in its entirety except for that portion that crosses Aughwick Creek. Hunters and hikers should account for this in their plans.

Tampa-area Mailman Bitten By Snake In Mailbox
      TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Forget rain, sleet or snow. The bite of a poisonous snake didn't keep mail carrier Efraim Arango from his mail route on Friday. The 66-year-old Arango was bitten as he slipped mail inside a box. He told authorities that he shook his arm and thwacked the small snake against his car door to break its grip.

     McConnellsburg Brownie Troop 1597 recently visited the Stoner Dairy Farm corn maze near Mercersburg. The girls had to find their way through a five-acre field of corn and then enjoyed a hayride and petting zoo. County 4-Hers Celebrate National 4-H Week, Youth Science Day
     Fulton County 4-H celebrated National 4-H Week and the first National 4-H Youth Science Day with an open house and family science fun night on Wednesday, October 8, at the Fulton Theatre. About 50 people participated in the science night activities. Pictured above is Dwayne, a first-grader from McConnellsburg Elementary, who is experimenting with hydro-gel powder that he harvested from a disposable diaper.
