Sportsman Health Fair Draws Big Crowd

The American Legion was host to Fulton County Medical Center's (FCMC) annual Sportsman Health Fair. More than 200 men, women and children came out to evaluate their overall health through an array of screenings provided by the Medical Center and other local healthcare providers.

"The biggest draw was the chance to win the Savage Model 17 hunting rifle, but I truly believe we've saved some lives today," said Misty Hershey, director of public relations and community benefits. "We had a few irregular EKGs, so staff advised that immediate actions be taken. All the results were also sent to the participant's primary care physicians after being read by cardiologist Michael T. Donahoe, M.D."

Longtime hunter Doris Oakman of Harrisonville, who visited the fair with her mother, Alice, and husband Steve, won the rifle, the event's top prize.

"This was Doris's first year at the health fair," Hershey said. "She is an avid hunter and looks forward to using her new gun."

Also during the day, food donations were accepted by the Fulton County Food Basket. There were a total of 201 items and $25 in cash received. Each donor received a free camouflage T-shirt courtesy of the FCMC Foundation, Bob Hoffman Chevrolet & Buick, Jack D. Steele D.M.D Family Dentistry, Thomas Automotive Family and Professional Uniforms & Advertising Specialties.
