Walter G. Smith
Walter G. Smith, 91, McConnellsburg, Pa., died at 10:15 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2008, in Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born in Big Cove Tannery, September 25, 1917, the son of Frank and Laura Brewer Smith.
He worked at many things in his lifetime. He worked for Rowe Mellott at his sawmill. He drove truck and worked in the slate quarry for H.B. Mellott.
He was employed at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, Letterkenny Army Depot, as well as the Pennsylvania State Parks Service. Finally, he worked for PennDOT, where he retired as a foreman. He owned a radio and television sales and repair shop in McConnellsburg for many years. He installed some of the first television sets and antennas in Fulton County. He also owned an LP gas service for 30 years, which he then sold in 1987.
He was a lifetime endowment member of the NRA. He enjoyed playing guitar and fiddle, singing and writing songs, hunting and being in the mountains, playing with his dogs, as well as feeding and watching the birds.
He attended Cito United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly I. McElrath Smith, whom he married February 11, 1961; two daughters: Carole Reel, McConnellsburg, and Sandra Kay (Glen) Souders, Jefferson, Md.; two sons: Harry G. Smith and William W. (Judy) Smith, both of McConnellsburg; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and a brother, John L Smith, McConnellsburg.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister Laura Smith Morton; brothers: George A., Dewey H., Harry E. and Frank B. Smith; a daughter, Shirley Smith Fagan; infant son, John F. Smith; infant unnamed grandson; and a great-granddaughter, Megan Dorado.
Memorial services will be on Friday September 26, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Cito United Methodist Church, Pastor John Godissart presiding. There will be no viewing and the burial is to be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fulton County Relay For Life or to Cito United Methodist Church building fund.
